    As a grad student at Columbia, I was a regular at Tom’s Restaurant in the late ’60’s and early ’70’s. When I was feeling flush, I’d have the Veal Parmigiana, but only if they had fixed it with a cutlet, not a patty. I knew I had status as a regular when I walked in one night and my favorite waitress Betty shrieked from the back “It’s REAL tonight, Honey!”
    What might make Tom’s Restaurant of particular interest to geeks is that on the floor above was one of the biggest computers outside the NSA/CIA, an IBM 360/95. This was part of NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS), which had remodeled the apartment building where the restaurant was housed. The IBM chugged away on mathematical models of stars, galaxies, and planetary atmospheres. James Hansen, the climate change guy, was a grad student or post-doc when I was there. He later became Director. I was part of a radio-telescope group — my lab shared a wall with the restaurant kitchen, so I had olfactory prompts of meal time…
